In the summer of 2017, I was fortunate enough to be invited to Slovenia to preview the relaunched range of Sun Living Camper Vans and Motorhomes. Sun Living is the brand name for the clean, simple, and minimal style of vehicles manufactured by Adria Mobil.

Clean, simple, and minimal. Yup, Sun Living has my name all over it, and it came as no surprise to anyone that I loved everything about it.

You can watch the video of that launch, please click here.

However, being wowed on a warm sunny Slovenian afternoon with a camera and a clipboard is one thing. Actually living with a Sun Living van for six weeks, taking it to a place with a cold and sometimes hostile climate to live in for a month, is a completely different ball game. Always one for a challenge, I jumped at the chance to take the van I fancied the most, the V60SP, on a January tour of my beloved Scotland.

Nobody is more interested to see how the van fares than I am. Actually, the Sun Living designers are pretty keen as well. To the rear is a fold-up bed exposing a neat rear garage area, but how useable is that space? The Truma combi heating system is proven to take the chill off an autumn evening, but will it cope with keeping the van toasty warm on a snow-capped Scottish mountain? How much gas will the heating consume? Will the waste tank freeze? What about driving on ice? Or road handling in a Hebridean gale?

There is only one way to find out the answer to all these questions, and off I set on my mission.

Scottish tourism has received some less-than-favourable press of late. The NC500 route captured the world’s imagination, which was fine until the world then decided to descend on the limited infrastructure and stretch it beyond its limits. Meanwhile, the Isle of Skye had to consider pinning an ‘Island Full’ sign to the Skye Bridge as parts of the island came close to being overwhelmed in the summer.

The solution is simple: Avoid the NC500, and avoid the summer. Explore New Spaces rather than go where everyone else is going.
